چکیده

Effect of aqueous extracts of Ocimum sanctum and Camellia sinensis on restraint stress-induced oxidative damage in the central nervous system (CNS) of R. norvegicus were evaluated in terms of lipid peroxidation (LPO), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Restraint stress was used for 3h/day for 6 days consecutively, caused a significant elevation in LPO and reduction in GSH, SOD and CAT in cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem. Post-treatment of O. sanctum and C. sinensis (100 mg/kg/day for 6 days) resulted in alteration of these parameters towards their control values. In conclusion, O. sanctum and C. sinensis posttreatment protected the CNS in different manner against restraint stress-induced oxidative damage in all three regions of brain.

Protective Effect of Safranal, a Constituent of Crocus sativus, on Quinolinic Acid-induced Oxidative Damage in Rat Hippocampus

Objective(s): Quinolinic acid (QA)-mediated excitotoxicity has been widely used as a model for studying neurodegenerative disorders. Recent studies suggested that saffron (Crocus sativus) or its active metabolite, i.e. safranal, exerts pharmacological actions on central nervous system including anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and neuroprotective properties. The present study aimed to investigate th...

Ameliorative properties of aqueous extract of Ficus thonningii on erythrocyte osmotic fragility induced by acetaminophen in Rattus norvegicus

In vitro antioxidant and erythrocyte protecting activities by aqueous extract of Ficus thonningii leaves on blood cells were studied in acetaminophen treated rats. The extract was safe at limit dose of 5000 mg kg-1body weight. The extract demonstrated dose dependent antihemolytic effect at dose levels between 50 and 200 m...

Plant medicine in the treatment of radiation-induced normal tissue lesions-A review

Radiation-induced normal tissue lesions, once seen as a consequence of loss of proliferative integrity of clonogenic target cells, inevitable and untreatable are now viewed as a result of dynamic interactions between multiple cell lines within a particular tissue that can be intervened. Normal tissue damage is the most important limiting factor in radiotherapy and a major component in the medic...

Exploring the potential effect of Ocimum sanctum in vincristine-induced neuropathic pain in rats

The present study was designed to investigate the ameliorative potential of Ocimum sanctum and its saponin rich fraction in vincristine-induced peripheral neuropathic pain in rats. Peripheral neuropathy was induced in rats by administration of vincristine sulfate (50 mug/kg i.p.) for 10 consecutive days. The mechanical hyperalgesia, cold allodynia, paw heat hyperalgesia and cold tail hyperalges...
